Do Natural Remedies Work for Injuries?
There are a lot of different techniques for handling sports injuries, but many people are now turning back to natural remedies in an attempt to seek relief. If you prefer not to take traditional medicine, there may be some assistance that you can see from these remedies, but it is vital to speak with your doctor before trying or adding anything new to your diet. While people have relied on many of these remedies for centuries, that is not a guarantee of safety, particularly if you are taking medicine that could cause an interaction.
Let’s take a look at some of the more common natural remedies that many people swear by and see whether or not there is good science to support these claims.
Bromelain has become very popular recently, and there are many athletes that claim almost complete healing after regular use. This is a component of the pineapple and is said to reduce inflammation. This occurs due to a specific hormone reaction that occurs when you take bromelain, which reduces overall inflammation.
The verdict? The jury is still out on this one. There are other natural anti-inflammatories such as garlic that have a longer history of success. Many people are allergic to pineapple, so this one is best left until more research has been done.
Vitamin E/Aloe –
These two are very powerful when used to treat small cuts, but can they also be useful when it comes to sports injuries? Both work by rebuilding tissue and speeding up the healing process, and are generally safe to take. They can reduce bruising, at least at skin level, and can be very soothing.
The verdict? This one is pretty safe to try, unless you have an allergy to aloe or are sensitive to vitamin E. It is probably best to stick with a topical application that contains only a small amount of Vitamin E since too much of this vitamin can be injurious to your health.
Olive Leaf –
If you don’t have low blood pressure or heart problems, this supplement may be very useful to you. People have used olive leaf for centuries as an antibacterial and to speed up the healing process. While it does cause a drop in blood sugar, and can provoke an allergic response in some people, it is usually quite effective. Many people use this as a tincture on injuries with great results.
The verdict? Try it, but check with your doctor first. They will be able to advise you on whether or not it is safe for you to take. It is best to start off with a small amount of olive leaf since it is quite powerful.
These are just a few of the most popular natural remedies that can be used to treat sports injuries. While many are effective, it is important to follow the advice of your doctor and if necessary use traditional means to recover from your injury, particularly if it is severe.
